Montana Farms Hiring Assistant Manager and Interns
Internships and Assistant Farm Manager Wanted on Montana Organic Farms – 2017
POSITIONS ON MONTANA FARMS ARE FULL FOR 2017
About the Montana Farms: Mill Crick Farm and Fourth Wave Farm are 5 and 6 year operations growing mixed vegetables, cut flowers, and a small amount of pastured pigs. Our markets are a mix of wholesale, farmers market, and a roadside farm stand. We currently have 6 acres combined in certified organic vegetable and cut flower production including several high tunnels for season extension and a greenhouse for field starts and bedding plants. This season we will be partnering on transitioning an additional 80 acre lease to organic production which will primarily be used for pasture/grain/hay as well as vegetables and cut-flowers.
We are currently seeking two interns for the 2017 growing season as well as an assistant farm manager. For the two intern positions, we are looking for motivated individuals who enjoy working outside and have a desire to learn about farming. Your current skill set is not as important as attitude and desire to learn. Interns will work Monday–Friday, roughly 8-9 hours a day with weekends off. Work will include duties in the greenhouse and field, including seeding, transplanting, weeding, harvesting, and processing/washing produce for sale. We will be working in all weather, which will vary greatly over the course of the season. What we hope to provide through this internship is training in the skills and knowledge needed to work on/manage a farm including greenhouse management; field tillage and fertility management; equipment use and maintenance; plant production;wholistic farm planning and record-keeping. We have working relationships with several area farms and interns will have the opportunity to visit other operations & interns over the summer through a program run by the Community Food and Agriculture Coalition in Missoula.
We provide a stipend of $800/month, housing, and food. The main farmstead where interns will be living is 2 miles up a bike path to the small town of Hamilton w/standard amenities and a couple miles from the base of Mill Creek Canyon, a popular hiking and rock-climbing spot in the Bitterroots. The Bitterroot valley offers incredible outdoor recreation opportunities beyond the valley there are numerous other options to explore Montana over the summer.
Housing options available include an 18 ft tipi w/woodstove, wall-tent with wood-stove, or camper. Separate kitchen, shower and washer available. Meals are on your own , however we provide anything the farm produces; primarily vegetables and meat. We look forward to sharing some group meals over the season.
