Organic Farm Manager and Volunteers – NY
Seeking Organic Farm Manager and Volunteers at Unadilla Community Farm in upstate New York.
Founded in 2013 by a group of farmhands and craftspeople, Unadilla Community Farm is a 12-acre organic fruit, vegetable, and egg farm situated in the heart of Amish country in upstate New York. Our mission is to provide a space for the teaching and practice of sustainable skills.
We are in the process of starting our farmstead from the ground up, relying exclusively on sustainable building materials. We sell our produce at an independent natural foods store and intend to host natural building, gardening, and craft-making workshops for the public in the future.
We are seeking an organic farm manager and volunteers to help out from May to August, with the option of staying longer. The farm manager oversees our fruit and nut trees, berry bushes, perennial herb guilds, raised beds, row crops, and seedlings in the greenhouse. Tasks include planting, weeding, mulching, watering, and harvesting, and managing our team of volunteers. There will be some heavy lifting involved, so bring a strong back and strong mind.
In addition to organic gardening, volunteer tasks include tending chickens and helping with the natural building projects. This season’s goals are: building more raised beds, installing our rainwater-fed irrigation system and ram pump, building a deer-proof fence around our orchard, and adding stonework with lime mortar to the walls of the barn. Building projects are led by permaculture instructor and experienced natural builder Ben Tyler (bensnaturalbuilding.blogspot.com).
Room and board is provided, in exchange for thirty hours of work per week. Additionally, the farm manager receives a monthly stipend, in recognition of the added responsibility. All-organic, vegetarian meals are included. Accommodations include: staying in our newly built tiny home (sleeps 2), staying in the two upstairs lofts of our unheated barn, or various tent platforms and camp spots around the property.
The closest public transportation is available in Utica and Cooperstown (40 minutes from the farm). We can pick people up from within a 40-minute radius of West Edmeston. For ridesharing, check out the Facebook group “One foot in NYC – One foot upstate.”
