The WE Over Me Farm at Paul Quinn College is a student-run farm located on the site of the College’s former football field in Highland Hills, a community of southern Dallas, Texas and a federally-recognized food desert. Our mission is to transform the health and well-being of under-resourced communities in Southern Dallas by providing fresh, healthy, affordable food options and by educating and empowering future generations to take better care of themselves, their environments, and their communities.
JOB DESCRIPTION
The WE Over Me Farm at Paul Quinn College is currently seeking a full-time Farm Foreman to assist with all farm activities to meet the needs of the Farm’s many programs and constituencies. The Foreman will work directly under the Farm Manager and will participate not only in all aspects of farm production, but also in the teaching and mentoring of work college student-employees and in the planning and implementation of all Farm events such as farm tours, volunteer workdays, field trips, on-farm classes, and fundraising events.
RESPONSIBILITIES
Responsibilities may include but are not limited to:
Working with students, staff, community members, volunteers, and others from diverse backgrounds to complete farm activities and execute farm programs and events.
Participating in all aspects of farm production including, but not limited to, crop planning, soil amendment, field preparation, seeding, planting, weed and pest control, harvesting, post-harvest handling, and annual clean-up.
Caring for farm livestock including chickens and fish, with responsibilities including feeding, watering, and cleaning.
Harvesting for and coordinating distribution of produce to clients including Paul Quinn students and staff, community members, local charitable organizations, restaurants and grocers, and others.
Making occasional deliveries of produce to the above constituents.
Using and maintaining all farm equipment and infrastructure including tractor, landscaping equipment, tillers, irrigation systems, and greenhouse cooling systems.
Assisting with farm marketing, including participation in special events and farmers markets.
Assisting with the planning, coordination, and execution of farm educational programs and events such as tours, volunteer workdays, gleaning events, field trips, on-farm classes, and fundraising events.
Supporting the incorporation of Paul Quinn College curricula into the life of the Farm.
MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS
1 year vegetable farming experience is required, organic farming experience is highly preferred but not required. All candidates must have:
Passion for sustainable farming practices, food justice, community development, and youth development.
The ability to stand for 8 to 10 hours per day.
The ability to complete physically demanding labor in all climate and weather conditions.
The ability to lift up to 50 lbs. repeatedly.
Excellent administrative, organizational, and communication skills.
A strong work ethic and ability to work independently and with others.
Interest or experience with teaching, environmental education preferred.
A flexible work schedule, with some evening and weekend hours required.
Reliable transportation, a valid driver’s license and car insurance.
The desire for a long-term position.
HOURS AND COMPENSATION
The Farm Foreman will be expected to work 40 hours per week, with some evening and weekend hours required. Compensation will be salaried, with possible benefits, rate commensurate with experience.
